Where the TB or SAM has a picture of
headphones next to an exercise, that exercise has an oral component, which you will find
on-line at the Голоса́́ web site.
Unless stated otherwise, where a page in the TB or SAM is assigned, you should complete
all activities on that page.
Unit 5 covers TB, pp. 139–76 and SAM, pp. 105–30.

typographical error in some versions of the TB; the word for ‘story’ is эта́ж, not

The word сме́на means ‘shift’, as in first shift, second shift, etc.

- SAM, pp. 124–25, read all materials associated with Kostya’s letter (упражне́ние В)
and write a response to that letter (you do not need to write any of the other
activities).
- TB, p. 152, prepare to answer упражне́ние 5-19 orally in class. Don’t write out your
text, but think about how you would use connecting phrases like the ones on p. 151
and specifications of time to avoid short, choppy sentences.
- Prepare for comprehensive vocabulary quiz on entire unit.

describes the daily schedule in the Russian army. Write down in Russian and English
the beginning times and the activities for three items you recognize, writing out
the times in words.

W, 12-05 Recitation
- TB, pp. 166–67, write answers to all questions in English. You won’t know all the
words, but you know enough to be able to be able to figure out the answers.
- Sign up in class for an oral final examination (10 minutes) with your recitation
instructor for Thursday, 12-06 or Friday, 12-07.
R, 12-06 Lecture
- TB, pp. 169–71, read email correspondence and write answers to questions on p. 171
in English.
F 12-07 Recitation
- SAM, p. 125, упражне́ние Г: write item #1 (notes, not full sentences) in Russian.
You’ll be asked to give a presentation in recitation, and also to hand in the
written notes you prepared.
- TB, p. 168, for each of the notes (from Irina, Volodia, Nina, and Vera), write in
English what you think they are about. Don’t translate them and don’t look up any
words you don’t know in a dictionary; just try to figure out as much as you can from
words you’ve learned plus words you recognize and summarize the contents as well as
you can.
- SAM, p. 125, write упражне́ние Д (интервью́) in English.
