The initial Course Description proposed evaluating Unit
examinations and the final examination on a 100-point scale. In order to support more
reliable curving in cases, we have implemented instead the following system:
- A perfect examination receives a score of 0, and points are deducted from this for
mistakes. This means that the numbers in the margins and at the top of your exam
reflect the number of points off.
- We deduct one point for a spelling error, two points for an error in grammar or in
an ending, and three points for a word that is either missing or significantly
garbled, up to a maximum of three points off per word. Spelling mistakes in endings
and spelling mistakes that have grammatical implications are two-point mistakes
because the grammatical involvement makes them more serious than simpler spelling
errors.
- Numerical scores are mapped onto letter grades according to a curve, with the median
not falling below B-.
