The paper will compare and contrast the legend of how Ol′ga avoids marriage to a Byzantine emperor by tricking him into becoming her baptismal sponsor with the legend of how the Merovingian Fredegund became queen by convincing her predecessor, Queen Audovera to become godmother to Audovera’s own child, thereby annulling Audovera’s marriage to King Chilperic. It will place both legends in context by noting that both medieval Western and Byzantine women do indeed (outside of legend) seem to have used baptismal sponsorship as a means to secure divorce.
