Ilya Muromets’s village was raided by the “Tugars” (who are supposed to represent Tatars) and he was unable to assist in its defense due to his being crippled from the waist down. Because of this, his betrothed was abducted and quite a bit of property, as well as life, was lost. Meanwhile, some pilgrims came upon “Invincor” (no, not a character from He-Man), the legendary hero, as he relinquished his mantle of protector of Russia and became a stone mountain. Invincor gave his sword to the pilgrims before his transformation, and these same pilgrims later come across Ilya, still stranded in his hut in the village. Ilya is hospitable to the pilgrims, and they bestow upon him the sword and some magic water which allows him to regain the function in his legs and also to become super-strong. Ilya decides to go forth and defeat the Tugars, and after being gifted with a magical super-horse goes off to perform various wondrous deeds.
